Backlinks are the transit lines of the internet.

High-domain authority backlinks connect one site page to another, whether on the same platform or a completely separate webpage. One-click and users are transported, which results in several SEO benefits.

How Do They Work?

Also known as “inbound links” or “incoming links”, backlinks are manually embedded into a selected word or phrase on a website.

They can be used as references when mentioning a product in a gift guide, or related articles in an interview. The opportunities are endless. But why use them?

Benefits of Backlinks

Among many things, backlinks boost SEO and website traffic. By providing a related backlink in your blog posts to another post on your site, you are able to recycle users and extend their visiting time. This is hard to do without backlinks.

Additionally, Google and other search engines value backlinks as “votes” to a listing. If an external site backlinks to your site or a blog post on your platform, it provides another source for search engines to hook on when sifting through the internet for user results.

Not to mention, backlinks, especially from other websites, add to your credibility and expertise.

For example, our client Susan Lister Locke, a custom jewelry designer, was featured in a blog post on creating your own fashion style in the sentence: “Whether that’s an engraved signet ring on your finger or a vintage-inspired scarf around your neck, let your accessories reflect your unique style.”

Cloud Adoption Solutions, a 100% women-owned, certified Salesforce CRM team, was mentioned as a source to boost sales in this sentence: “Fortunately, you can utilize managed services for Salesforce to ensure you make the most out of the investment.”

Both clients have experienced an increase in traffic and credibility with these backlinks because they come from external sources. Not to mention, the backlinks have allowed clients and customers who didn’t know about them prior, to discover them; a subtle form of marketing.

The Balance of Backlinks

Now, you might be thinking: the more backlinks you have, the more likely search engines are going to choose you in a search. And yes, having a good number does boost your SEO. But just like anything, too many can be a red flag, because an excess of backlinks can look like spam to search engines.

On average, ten per month is a safe number to aim for. Anything above, and they won’t recommend your site as a result.

Another tip to remember: Always focus on quality rather than quantity. If you are building links to unrelated sources or unrelated sites, it can lower your credibility. Build links to high domain authority websites within your niche, instead.

Where To Start

Backlinks are actually really easy to implement—and it’s likely you have already done it before in an email or a Slack message by linking a word to a website or source.

A pile of scrabble letters

With articles focused on a particular product(s) or discussion point, it’s fairly easy to pick out where to add one. If a product is mentioned, backlink it. If you make a point or quote a source, backlink it.

For general posts, look for related words or phrases in a sentence you could backlink to other blog posts you’ve published on your site or, better yet, to your products to recycle your users.

As you have probably guessed, backlinks are also a great way to support fellow small business owners. You can introduce your customers to other products and services you know and love, and vice versa!
